01 · SUCCESSION

Succession planning and handover

Because they're family. The kind with opinions about dinner.

A proper succession plan for her. Who takes her, how she's cared for, and the four hundred small things only you know.

The Olfie Book in terracotta, flat on linen beside a lead and a coffee

WHAT GOES IN IT

Someone else could feed her. They couldn't tell you she won't go out in the drizzle.

Everything that makes her her lives in exactly one place, and it's your head. Olfie gets it out. Properly, beautifully, once.

  • Her profile and the important information someone would need on the day
  • Guardian nomination, and your instructions for her future care
  • Her routines, needs, personality and preferences: food, walks, vet, medication, what she's scared of
  • Memories, photographs and letters

WHAT'S INSIDE

It opens with the good part.

Nobody sits down to do admin about their pet. They sit down to write about her.

  1. 01

    This is her

Her name, and the names you actually call her.

  2. 02

    How you found each other

The bit you'll read aloud to someone.

  3. 03

    A day

Morning, the walk, the four o'clock wait, whose side of the bed.

  4. 04

    What she eats

Including the one she'd sell you out for.

  5. 05

    The things only you know

Her noises, her worries, the tell that means she's off.

  6. 06

    Her people and her places

Vet, after-hours, groomer, her dog friends.

  7. 07

    Health

Meds and doses, and how you get them into her.

  8. 08

    If you're not there

Her guardian, and the person after them.

And at the end, a letter to whoever has her next. The only part of the book where you're on your own, which is exactly right.

THE THINGS ONLY YOU KNOW

The longest section is the least useful one.

Page after page on things that will never help anybody care for her: the noise she makes when you pick up the lead, what she does when she's happy, the daftest thing she's ever done.

It's the reason the book gets finished. And buried in the middle of it is the one page that could save her life: how you'd know she isn't herself, which nobody but you can answer.

THE OLFIE BOOK · $179

It opens with the good part.

Nobody sits down to do admin about their pet. They sit down to write about her. So it opens with the good part: how you found each other. The hard part comes later.

Two cloths: forest green or terracotta. Same book, your call.

A cloth-bound hardcover with a gold foil wordmark, made to order. Somewhere she can actually be found when someone needs it.

The Olfie app, $10 with the book. Medication changes. Vets move. Guardians move interstate. The app is the online companion where you keep her profile, care plan and guardian details, and share them with the people who need them.

GUARDIAN NOMINATION

The whole thing turns on one conversation.

There's a place in the book to name the person who'd step in, and the person after them, and to write down exactly how you'd like her looked after. It's the conversation everyone puts off.

The Olfie Kit comes with a guardian envelope to hand them, because that conversation is the part everyone puts off.

The difference between a plan and a hope is that you actually asked.

WHO WROTE IT

Written by a lawyer who is completely unreasonable about her dog.

I'm Mea. A lawyer who is also, unreasonably, a dog person.

Pet succession planning is a real discipline. It's what good estate lawyers do for people: who takes responsibility, what they need to know, and how it actually gets handed over.

Almost nobody had ever done it properly for animals, and the few attempts were photocopied forms. So Olfie is that discipline, done the way you'd actually want it done for a dog you love.

THE HONEST BIT

Your vet will give you a free form. It isn't the same thing.

There are free versions of this. The RSPCA has one, the NSW Trustee has a wallet card, your vet has a photocopied sheet. They're perfectly good, and almost nobody fills them in.

Only 1 in 50 Australians makes any provision for a pet at all. Not because they don't care. Because a photocopied form isn't something you sit down with on a Sunday and enjoy.

Olfie is the version for people who are, frankly, a bit much about their pet. It's beautiful on purpose. That's the only reason anybody ever finishes one.
